Putin Signs Articles of War

According to The New York Times, “President Vladimir V. Putin said he would recognize the independence of two Russian-backed territories in eastern Ukraine and warned the government of Ukraine that further bloodshed ‘will be fully and wholly’ on its conscience, delivering an emotional and aggrieved address that set the stage for the possibility of Russian military action against Ukraine. The White House responded by saying that President Biden will begin imposing limited economic sanctions on the two separatist regions, stopping short of imposing any penalties directly on Russia for now but vowing that more would come. Leaders of the European Union also condemned Putin’s move and said they will impose sanctions on those involved.”

First, you should be absolutely clear about what Putin has done. He has essentially signed articles of war. He should have just declared war out loud. This is the mother of all pre-texts to justify an invasion. He literally just created the circumstances for Anschluss or whatever the Russian term is for the same. In short, Putin created a “legal” — only insofar as Russian jurisprudence extends — rationale for defending these new Russia-allied “states” from Ukraine “aggression.” So, what does that mean for Ukrainians who are not Russian-backed separatists living in those provinces? They are now about to be under the direct influence (read: control) of Russia. Ukrainians one minute, Russians the next. And that is how wars are started. The dye has been cast. Again, I say the war actually started a few days ago, but if people want a more formal indication, then I say bombs will fly and tanks will roll within hours from now. Caesar crossed the Rubicon today.

Second, I am pleasantly surprised Biden has already said he will impose sanctions for this most recent Putin action. It was swift and direct. Good start, but not enough! War is here, folks!

Allies’ Appeasement Policy (Again)

According to Axios, “Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a searing criticism of Western inaction against Russian aggression on Saturday, arguing that Ukraine has acted as a ‘shield’ for the past eight years and that Europe’s security architecture has utterly failed. … Zelensky began his speech by recalling Putin’s address to the Munich Security Conference in 2007, in which the Russian president attacked the U.S.-led global order and eastward expansion of NATO as ‘extremely dangerous.’ … ‘15 years ago, it was the Russian Federation that made a statement here challenging the global security order. How did the world respond? Appeasement.’ … Zelensky also criticized the West for claiming that Putin has made the decision to invade, but not imposing sanctions until the attack has begun: ‘What are you waiting for? We don’t need sanctions after bombardment happens, after we have no borders, no economy. Why would we need those sanctions then?’”

I have no idea where Zelensky is wrong! As I said in a previous post, we have Bush II and Obama to thank, in part, for this appeasement policy. And traitor trump did not engage in appeasement. Oh, no! He’s done more than appeasement! Rather, he’s the out-right f***ing leader of the American Fifth Column, which is alive and well in the U.S.A., thanks to Faux News and Tucker “Bow Tie Bimbo” Carlson stoking pro-Russian sentiment in America. Needless to say, every president — except Biden at the moment — has allowed Putin to walk all over neighboring countries, Western Allies, and America. Putin has been threatening democracies for — well — forever as democracies simply stand by and watch. And that is exactly what’s going to doom the Ukraine crisis. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: America and NATO are going to sacrifice Ukraine. Once the economic pressures of war hit home, then the alliance with falter. Mark my words!

What do you think is actually going to happen once Russia starts bombing and rolling over Ukraine in full force? How long do you think the country will hold out? A month? Six weeks? God bless Ukraine’s fighting forces and God bless the people’s will to resist Russia, but let’s be honest — and no one has openly admitted this in the public forum (MSM) that I;’ve read or seen — but Ukraine has no chance of prevailing. Sure, sure, Putin can find himself in a protracted guerilla war. But all he needs to do is overthrow Ukraine’s government; he doesn’t need to occupy every city and every block. Once his cronies are in their political places and the puppet government takeover is complete, then the war will be won and he’ll claim “peace” and victory. The aim is to control Ukraine’s government, not win the hearts and minds of the citizens. He’ll win their obedience in the end. What will Allies be doing all the while? Sanctions! Those things against which Russia has already been steeling itself. Unless there is a catastrophic screw-up whereby Russian forces find themselves having wandered into NATO territory or attacking NATO forces, then the Allies will just sit on the sidelines wringing their hands hoping for a quick end to war and accepting whatever occupation ensues. This is going to be Anschluss all over again.

One already gets a sense that America and NATO are weak-kneed. Zelensky makes a great point: If Biden thinks that Putin has decided to attack — and really I think the war started a few days ago — then why are the Allies still waiting to levy sanctions? I mean at the very least if they expect sanctions to be a deterrent, then shouldn’t the Allies show a bit of their hand by now when we are on the cusp of this war getting out of control? At this point, the “deterrent” of sanctions is merely empty words, as if the Allies have yet to agree on what sanctions would entail. Even Congress could not agree on a sanctions bill. From The New York Times, “For weeks, as President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia signaled he was moving closer to invading Ukraine, members of Congress in both political parties vowed that the Senate would pass a ‘mother of all sanctions’ bill targeting Moscow that would prove the overwhelming, bipartisan American resolve to stand with Kyiv against Russian aggression. But on Thursday evening, with the threat of invasion looming ever more acutely, senators could muster only the legislative equivalent of a strongly worded letter scolding Mr. Putin for a ‘provocative and reckless’ military buildup on Ukraine’s border, passing a nonbinding resolution quickly and without debate before leaving Washington for a weeklong break.” Jesus-f***ing-Christ-on-the-m*****f***ing-Cross! Welcome to stupid America!

Although, I should say without reservation that sanctions are not going to work; Putin’s Russia has been living under and coping with some sort of sanctions regime since they first occupied Crimea and parts of Eastern Ukraine; thus, either the West failed to impose meaningful penalties for Russia’s bad behavior going back years or the West never intended the sanctions to hurt that much in the first place because — you know — Russia exports a lot of energy resources and they are usually rewarded for it — Nord Stream I and Nord Stream II. So, you see that Russia’s occupation of a sovereign country engenders more business from the West! In either case, it appears the Allies and Congress are failing to get their act together beyond token strong words and warnings. I’m not sure why this juncture would be any different.

Wow! If I were Putin looking at the coordination and determination of the West to deter me, then I would be laughing. To be sure, NATO appears more unified than ever, but that unification is only in messaging and words. What happens when the rubber meets the road is a whole other situation. Not sure why democracies are always so pitiful at defending democracy. They have a habit of putting off the hard decisions until it’s too late, and it is too late for Ukraine.

The War Has Already Started, Morons!

Read: “Ukraine says violations of ceasefire in east continue” — “Russian government responsible for recent cyberattacks against Ukraine, White House says” — “Ukraine and US say vehicle explosion in separatist-controlled city was staged” — “Putin says Russia must strengthen economy ‘from within’ to counter sanctions threat” — “Second breakaway region in Ukraine organizes evacuation of civilians” — “Inside the kindergarten that was hit by shelling in the Donbas region” — “Russia expelled second-most senior diplomat at the US embassy in a tit-for-tat measure, foreign ministry says” — “Separatists in Ukraine sign ‘mobilization’ decrees amid threat of invasion.”

I think the headlines above really say it all. The war has already started! Sure, it’s not the conventional Blitzkrieg kicking off in the early morning hours that everyone expected to happen; rather, Ukraine and Russia are slipping into war. And I am not talking about the existing war with the pro-Russian separatists (aka traitors) in Eastern Ukraine. This moment is the beginning of a new war. Indeed, there will be a moment when tanks start rolling and airplanes start dropping bombs, but the event has already started. Buckle up! I have a really bad feeling about this.

Pretty Bridge?

Seriously? This is supposed to be proof of de-escalation? Does Putin really take Americans to be this stupid? Granted, we (not me) did elect traitor trump who pretend to be president for four years, but honestly. For all we know, each of these tanks could be going back for repair after their “large-scale military exercise” (aka war games) with Belarus. I mean that is all part of the wargaming process — practice and evaluate command and control, strategy, tactics, personnel, and equipment. During realistic maneuvers, sh*t breaks or doesn’t work as well as expected, so all the crap that can’t be fixed in the field goes back to the body shop. (Russia was not merely conducting target practice with its neighbor.) Or the train could be going in the wrong direction. Who knows? I don’t know the geography, and I don’t think Putin cares if anyone else cares. Or this could be a stock video taken at any time in the past — these guys are the masters of propaganda. The bridge is pretty, though.

Believe Nothing: Russia

From NBC News, “Russia said it was pulling back more forces from around Ukraine Wednesday, the latest move in an apparent effort to ease tensions that has done little to assuage Western fears Moscow might be planning an imminent invasion of its neighbor. Russia says that it is pulling back some of the 150,000 troops that the United States and its allies warn have converged around Ukraine on three sides. But with the world searching for signs that a deadly new conflict on European soil might be averted, days of high-stakes signaling from Moscow has been with skepticism by the West.”

In the great words of James Tiberius Kirk, “They’re animals. Don’t believe them. Don’t trust them” (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, 1991). Putin is a liar! And there is a huge difference between “pulling back” and de-escalation. These forces could merely be rotating out of front-line positions to behind-the-line positions for rest, relaxation, and most importantly re-tooling. Lord knows Putin has built up enough forces to be able to do so. Troops can only be at a heightened state of military readiness for so long before they, too, get complacent. Crying wolf works both ways. Soldiers don’t like to be in an endless state of readiness — either they intend to fight or don’t. They are not supposed to be in maybe mode for months on end, which is why I think Putin is bound to make a decision soon. (I think he is going to pull the trigger.) I think he is going to call the West’s bluff. Look, morons. The West is not willing to engage in a large-scale war, and they fear a war that gets out of control. The worst that will befall Russia as they roll into Ukraine are more sanctions, and as with sanctions against other rogue nations like North Korea, Syria, and Iran, they will get around them and they will endure, especially with help from China. NATO will do much handwringing and announce much condemnation. So, Ukraine will be on its own when the time comes, sadly!

I am not sure what exactly Putin is waiting for since he clearly has no real interest in diplomacy. (Putin can initiate a false flag at any time.) In the meantime, “negotiations” are all blah, blah, blah, and Western diplomats seem to think that another day of talking and not shooting is a diplomatic victory. Eh, I’m not convinced by that logic. All it does is give Putin a chance to obfuscate his intentions and his desires. The West does not do well in a state of confusion whereas Putin and Russians seem to thrive in such conditions. Deception is the rule. Ala Chamberlian, the West is busy congratulating themselves for avoiding another day of fighting while Putin adjusts his chess pieces on the board. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Bullies need to be put in their place, and sometimes the best thing to do is to bloody their nose.

Olympics: Russia Cheats

Reporting from CNN, “A drugs test controversy that has overshadowed Beijing 2022 is set to rumble on after the Winter Olympics finishes. For now, teenage figure skater Kamila Valieva has won a temporary reprieve — the 15-year-old gets to compete in the women’s single skating competition on Tuesday. … On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that Valieva can compete for the remainder of this year’s Winter Games, despite testing positive for a prohibited substance ahead of Beijing 2022. … The head of the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) Travis Tygart says Russia has ‘hijacked the competition’ and ‘stolen the moment from clean athletes’ for the ‘sixth consecutive Olympic Games’ after CAS rejected appeals to reinstate a provisional ban on Valieva.”

What else is new? It wouldn’t be the Olympics if Russian athletics did not get caught cheating. Of course, it would also not be the Olympics if the governing bodies of sports did not somehow find a way to allow Russian competitors to continue performing despite failing drug tests. I hope people realize that Russia as a nation has been banned from three Olympics, Beijing being the most recent. Consequently, Russian athletes are allowed to compete only under a neutral banner — Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) — and, naturally, they’re allowed to continue to cheat because nations keep letting them get away with it. Russia has a long history of doping its athletes, so this is not surprising. The entire country is a nation of cheaters and liars — from Putin to athletes. I’m sorry for athletes who had the misfortune of being born in Russia, but they should not be allowed to compete — ever!

Democracy, Eh!

Data: Economist Intelligence Unit; Map: Jared Whalen/Axios

According to Axios, “An annual global democracy index dropped to its lowest score since tracking began in 2006, with just 45.7% of the world’s population living in a democracy of some sort. … At his inaugural ‘Summit for Democracy’ in December, President Biden cast the global advance of authoritarianism as ‘the defining challenge of our time.’ He pledged to spend up to $424 million over the next year on democratic renewal initiatives. … The index ranks countries on a scale of 1-10, based on 60 indicators grouped into five categories: electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, political culture and civil liberties. … Ongoing political polarization during Biden’s first year in office contributed to a democratic decline in the U.S., branded a ‘flawed democracy’ that saw its score drop from 7.92 to 7.85. … The top five countries for democracy are Norway (9.75), New Zealand (9.37), Finland (9.27), Sweden (9.26) and Iceland (9.18).” Funny how the most democratic nations are the ones with economies that most provide a social safety net so that more citizens can prosper. You know, that s-word RepubliKKKlans fear here in America. More evidence that Americans really don’t want a well-functioning democracy. Americans would rather have a poorly performing democracy as long as they can keep the chance to be as greedy and selfish as possible. Everyone thinks they are going to be the next billionaire. There is a direct correlation between a country’s form of government and how it organizes its economy.

And this from The Hill, “The poll, conducted by YouGov, found that 42 percent of Americans surveyed said that the U.S. should send financial aid to Ukraine, compared to 24 percent who said it was a bad idea and 34 percent who said that they were unsure. Fifty-five percent of Americans said that they were against sending U.S. troops in to fight Russian soldiers in the event of an incursion in Ukraine. Only 13 percent of those surveyed thought it was a good idea. Thirty-four percent of Americans disapprove of U.S. troops going to Ukraine to assist but not fight the Russians if an invasion would occur. Thirty-three percent support the idea and 33 percent are unsure of their position.” What is most important in these results is the combination of those against helping Ukraine and those “unsure,” which is just another way of saying Americans don’t care and if hard-pressed would decide against helping a country trying to move toward democracy. How is it that after World War I, World War II, and the Cold War we still have such an isolationist streak in America? How is this possible? It is incomprehensible to me. It’s as if Americans have learned nothing from the past. As if nothing in any other hemisphere of the planet impacts us. As if we no longer care about being the nation that defends democracies around the world, much less at home. I expected nothing less from Americans!

Put these two artifacts together and this is why Biden has it right in regard to both the battle for democracy around the world and standing up to Russia over Ukraine, but unfortunately, the rest of America’s idiocracy just doesn’t get it, and probably will never be convinced otherwise. Let’s face it: America is too stupid it keep a democracy. Autocracy in America, in particular, is on the rise as RepubliKKKlans continue to consolidate power at the local and state levels to the point where rigged elections and voter suppression will be the new normal as a means for RepubliKKKlans, MAGA morons, evil evangelicals, and QAnon kooks to retain permanent political power, and Americans will do the collective ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ while moving toward more fascism. This is why Ukraine is so important. This is why elections matter. This is why having an engaged and aware — that’s putting it politely — citizenry matters. This is why fighting for democracy around the world matters.

Putin likes to complain that NATO nations on Russia’s border are a threat to their national security. That is a lie, of course. The reason Putin is so intent on invading Ukraine is that he fears democracy. It has nothing to do with NATO expansion and everything to do with securing Russia’s autocracy and rebuilding the U.S.S.R. Plain and simple. Democracies are almost never the aggressors — thanks to Bush II for the Iraq War II disaster that proves the rule. Does Putin truly think if NATO were to expand right up to Russia’s border that the alliance would start to invade? That is nonsense thinking. What he fears is that the people of Russia will want to become a true democracy if it gets too close. But guess what? It appears that Americans fear democracy, too! Oh, well.

I think it’s already about 95% too late for America. All the pieces have fallen into place. After traitor trump, RepubliKKKlans have seized the opportunity to change election laws in all the right places to keep themselves in power no matter what the election results. Redistricting has only boosted their chance and SCOTUS is the final firewall that will gladly uphold anti-democratic and illiberal issues for the next 20 years. As I’ve repeatedly said before, the stars have all aligned in favor for RepubliKKKlans to kill the rest of democracy at home, and it seems the rest of the world is in the same position with America leading the way; it is sad to see polls indicate that Americans really don’t care what happens to Ukraine even though the fate of that nation is critically important to determine if democracies of the world can stand up and win against autocracies. It’s all linked, people. How many times do I have to keep saying it? It’s all linked. These events happen concurrently for a reason. Putin is not acting in a vacuum. RepubliKKKlans are not acting in a vacuum. Traitor trump’s take over of the RepubliKKKlan Party did not happen in a vacuum. Democracy is dying not in a vacuum! Eh! Oh, well. No one cares! Welcome to stupid America!

News Flash: Brady Retires and Snow in Winter

Dominating cable news programs today are chiefly Brady retires from football — maybe — and there is a snowstorm in the Northeast during winter. Meanwhile from Reuters, “Russia’s military buildup near Ukraine has expanded to include supplies of blood along with other medical materials that would allow it to treat casualties, in yet another key indicator of Moscow’s military readiness, three U.S. officials tell Reuters. Current and former U.S. officials say concrete indicators — like blood supplies — are critical in determining whether Moscow would be prepared to carry out an invasion, if Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to do so. The disclosure of the blood supplies by U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, adds another piece of context to growing U.S. warnings that Russia could be preparing for a new invasion of Ukraine as it masses more than 100,000 troops near its borders.” This is clue #3 according to the Atlantic Council, and the MSM is preoccupied with football and weather.

Un-f***ing-believable. I guess the average American moron is still apprehending the forthcoming Ukraine-Russia conflict as a regional matter wherein America should be completely indifferent to the consequences of yet “another European conflict”; I’m beginning to view Russian aggression as something larger or at least something that will quickly get out of control. Have Americans learned nothing from the last two world wars? I know, it’s a silly question because the obvious answer is of course not! While I don’t desire that the MSM start beating the war drums, per se, they really should be preparing the general public better. I thought that was made rather clear by the recent news conference with Secretary of Defense Austin and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Milley. One had to read between the lines, but Milley was signaling a not so pretty outcome to the current state of Russia’s military campaign. But, I guess Americans love to enjoy the delusions of adverse winter weather reports and sports trivia. Eh, whatever. F*** me! Welcome to stupid America.
