Greg Abbott said Thursday that his pandemic-era public health disaster declaration, which has given him unprecedented powers for the past 1,049 days, would stay in place until state legislators pass laws banning COVID-19-related restrictions on Texans and strengthening the state’s power at the border. … After more than 93,000 deaths and 8.2 million COVID-19 cases in Texas in the 34 months since Abbott’s declaration was made, the state remains one of about half a dozen still under a statewide declared disaster or public health emergency. … If the Texas Legislature had a problem with disaster declarations and Abbott’s behavior under them, it could have rebuked him with legislation in 2021 that would have curtailed his powers in disasters, or it could have required legislative action to declare a disaster or even ended the proclamation. No such bills made it to his desk.”

According to CNN, “Five former Memphis police officers who were fired for their actions during the arrest of Tyre Nichols earlier this month were indicted on charges including murder and kidnapping, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy announced Thursday. The former officers, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith, Emmitt Martin and Desmond Mills Jr., have each been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, two charges of aggravated kidnapping, two charges of official misconduct and one charge of official oppression, Mulroy said. … The criminal charges come about three weeks after Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was hospitalized after a traffic stop and ‘confrontation’ with Memphis police that family attorneys have called a savage beating. Nichols died from his injuries on January 10, three days after the arrest, authorities said.”

First, allow me to say that I make no judgments about the veracity of the allegations or the incident itself. Actually, I am utterly indifferent to yet another situation of rogue policing. But I find it supremely curious that these particular five police have met the swiftest justice I’ve ever seen after police abuse surfaces. I wonder why this situation is different. Why oh why are these five so different that within a mere short three weeks after the death of someone at the hand of police brutality, they are charged with murder? What could it be? What could possibly be the one aggravating fact that rushed these five to jail when let’s say whitey usually doesn’t meet justice for months or years, if at all? Does anyone have a guess? Anyone at all? Don’t be shy. Take a guess. Wrong answers are fine. Could it be that these five cops are Black? Of course, it is. Whereas a white cabal of police would probably never meet justice — and certainly not within a month — it seems people could not wait to convict these five minority police. Naturally, this also feeds right into racists’ beliefs about the Black community, for this is not a case of police brutality and holding police accountable for their actions. No! To racists of America, this is just another example of Black-on-Black crime. Welcome to stupid America!

From The Guardian, “School teachers in Florida’s Manatee county are removing books from their classrooms or physically covering them up after a new bill went into effect that prohibited material unless deemed appropriate by a librarian, or ‘certified media specialist.’ If a teacher is found in violation of these guidelines, they could face felony charges. … Scrutiny of teaching material in Florida schools heightened under the leadership of the rightwing Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, whose administration says it is actively working to ‘protect parental rights,’ which includes a prohibition on childhood education on gender, sexual orientation and critical race theory.”

Most Democrats are dead set against negotiating as Biden signals he’s prepared to meet with McCarthy, arguing any talks will just be gobbled up by Republicans who will then ask for more. Other Democrats think it is unrealistic for Biden and his party to take a no-negotiations stance, seeing it as politically rigid and likely to backfire.”

According to Aljazeera, “The United States and Germany have pledged to send state-of-the-art battle tanks to Ukraine, paving the way for several of its European allies to follow suit. The moves, announced by President Joe Biden and Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday, will see Washington deploy 31 Abrams tanks while Berlin will supply Kyiv with 14 German-made Leopard 2 units at first.” Holysh*t! Thirty-one whole tanks from America alone. Add to that 14 tanks from Germany, 14 from the U.K., 14 from Poland, and an untold number from Finland, Norway, Spain, and Netherlands. That brings the total to no fewer than 73 tanks! I am so excited by this game-changer that I can hardly stand it! Not!

Aljazeera further reports, “Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested 300 tanks to help push back Russia’s invasion forces. Moscow said Western-supplied tanks will ‘burn’ and dismissed suggestions they will impact the outcome of the nearly yearlong conflict.” So, what does all this mean? The West is failing Ukraine, of course! Plain and simple. Not only is the West refusing to send the necessary number of tanks to actually help Ukraine win the war, but what they are promising to send may be too late at this point. I heard the Biden administration suggest that it could take at least six months and up to a year to get the Abrams tanks to Ukraine. Really? Six months to a year!

I thought part of the reason the U.S. changed course on providing tanks was to counter the impending offensive for Russia expected this Spring. (I guess it was also partly to break the log jam with Germany and other countries sending tanks of their own.) Nonetheless, and once again, this is the West helping Ukraine too little, too late because the West refuses to understand the threat that is Russia fully. Whatever! At this rate, Putin’s plan to slowly wear down Ukraine and the Western alliance seems to be working — slowly but surely. The West still has one foot in and one foot out of committing to help Ukraine. This is more cooperation and coordination than Putin had expected, but he understands that this is the high water mark for the West, so their level of commitment will only weaken. Russia may be losing on the battlefield, but they have tens of millions of people to use as fodder, so Putin only needs to wait for Western democracies to lose their attention because that’s what we do — get bored, take our eyes off the prize, and become complacent. This seems to be a natural by-product of an easy life that democracies engender. Well, it’s all fun and games until you suddenly find yourself fighting for your life in a dictatorship. Oh, well. Reporting from CNN, “Facebook-parent Meta said on Wednesday that it will restore former President Donald Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram in the coming weeks, just over two years after suspending him in the wake of the January 6 Capitol attack. ‘Our determination is that the risk [to public safety] has sufficiently receded,’ Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg said in a blog post. ‘As such, we will be reinstating Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks. However, we are doing so with new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses.’”

Reporting from The New York Times, “Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Wednesday that Germany would send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other nations to send their own, relenting after weeks of domestic and international pressure to deliver armored vehicles aimed at helping Kyiv regain territory seized by Russia. The move came after U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that the White House would announce as early as Wednesday that it would send M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, appearing to assuage Mr. Scholz’s reluctance to send tanks without Washington also doing so.”

But let’s not kid ourselves: The road to this point has been complete and abject bullsh*t on behalf of both Germany and the U.S. This war that the terrorist state of Russia brought to Ukraine is not some junior high school dance where the boys are waiting for the girls to be the first ones on the dance floor and vice versa so that each is starting at one another and an empty dance space for the first hour. “No, you go first!” This kind of jejune mentality is costing Ukraine blood and treasure. Just last week, officials were arguing the American tank was not the “right” piece of hardware for Ukraine, that it is too complicated to operate, that it uses too much of the wrong fuel, and that it requires too much maintenance. Jesus-f***ing-Christ! If there is one thing many Americans have come to learn about our tanks — from our own military, nonetheless — is that the Abrams tank is, apparently, a piece of sh*t and should not be used in war. What the actual f***!?!? I guess all those disadvantages go out the window.

Then there was the fear that sending any tanks — and this has been the primary argument for the last 11 months — would escalate the war and “provoke” Russia. Are you f***ing kidding me with this sh*t? This reasoning has always been a bullsh*t excuse expressed by a supremely weak and deficient West. I’m not sure what the collective military brass has been thinking for the last several months, but when Russia rolled into Ukraine the first time in 2014 and then again in 2022, that was the escalation! Russia escalated the war, not the West or Ukraine. And I’m not sure what part of f***ing war offensive, counteroffensive, and defensive actions would not be considered a provocation. Every action in war is a provocation, or no one would be firing at each other. Un-f***ing-believe. I’m glad the West is finally coming around, but they’re late, and it’s still all a bit timid and underwhelming help. Once again, I will repeat myself: Russia has already declared war on the West. The next European war is already here you f***ing morons! The West is, as usual, willfully choosing to be ignorant and thereby putting off the eventual and unavoidable battle that must come to end the nation that is Russia in order to restore world peace! At the time, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights warned Kacsmaryk is a ‘culture warrior who[se] … record reveals a hostility to LGBT equality and to women’s health,’ adding ‘he would not be able to rule fairly and impartially in cases involving those issues.’”
