An Axios headline reads: “Boris Johnson sends letter to EU requesting Brexit delay.” Look! Briton (Brexiters) want Brexit over already. The E.U. wants it over already, too, so they can move on to other priorities. Britons voted hastily and incorrectly to leave the E.U., and they should just crash out at this point. Even though I still believe voters should have a second referendum to validate the Brexit deal or Remain, it seems all a bit too late for that. I think people should live the consequences of their votes. So be it! Maybe people will think twice about casting a protest vote or voting out of passion rather than using dispassionate reasoning — as it seems those who voted to leave did so either out of frustration to or a protestation of the status quo. Fine! Of course, the most significant reordering of Great Britain’s economy in 40 years should be determined by one popular vote. It’s insane, but that’s what they want and that’s what they should get. Not to mention, I think the E.U. should make leaving painful to deter other countries, and they are in a very sweet spot to say, “No more”; they have bent over backward to accommodate Britain: two extensions, a renegotiation of the deal, and a resolution to the Irish backstop. Enough is enough. They have 11 days to get it done or not done at all! Good luck with that!
