Is Capitalism Waking Up to Democracy?

While it is fantastic and refreshing news that American and European companies are initiating their own “sanctions” by severing business ties with Russia, there is a more unsettling and fundamental truth underlying these actions; capitalism has been in bed with authoritarian nations and dictators for too long. Unfortunately, there is a potent anti-nationalistic proclivity in the pursuit of expanding capitalism at the expense of democracy. American and European companies eager to do business in international markets all too often sacrifice domestic interests while knowingly enriching dictators and their regimes. Putin and Xi are two prime examples. What has American capitalism, in particular, wrought with its relationships in Russia and China? A militaristic Russia and a relentlessly rising China that is also bent on military expansion.

Moreover, American companies have been sacrificing American workers for decades as every company pursuing higher and higher profits exports manufacturing to China and outsourcing work to other, low-paying countries. Incredibly, American companies have consistently failed to weigh national interests in their cost-benefit analysis; it is purely a bottom-line calculus, which may finally be coming back to bite them but only by force. There is a reason why “Made in America” is a laughable cliche. There is profound hypocrisy in the way businesses — like traitor trump — proclaim the great American manufacturer, yet they send their manufacturing operations overseas. The traitor trump brand (e.g., suits and ties to name a few of many) is made in China. Adding insult to injury, his “see you next Tuesday” daughter miraculously procured dozens of Chinese patents in the first year of her work in the White House. For all those American business leaders who profess the need to bring business back to America but never do, I guess it takes a war for them to realize that having done business with dictators and authoritarian governments may not have been in the world’s best interest and — ultimately — their bottom line.

Nature Always Restores Balance

From The New York Times, “Sometimes, Bruce C. Glavovic feels so proud to be an environmental scientist, studying coastal planning and teaching future researchers, that it moves him to tears. Other times, he wonders whether any of it has been enough. Scientists have proved beyond doubt that climate change is transforming the planet for the worse. Yet their work has mostly failed to spur governments to address the issue. When all the signs are telling scientists that their research is not being heard, it is tragic, Dr. Glavovic said, that they just keep producing more of it. … The new report, all 3,675 pages of it, was issued on Monday and concludes that global warming is outpacing our ability to cope [emphasis added].”

Scientists are getting more frustrated because humanity consistently ignores them and science. Each time I read another article about climate change, I just chuckle. At this point, there is really nothing else to do because it’s all too late, morons. It’s also laughable because scientists have yet to conclude (or admit, perhaps) that it is too late. It has been too late, probably for the last decade. We’ve already passed the point of no return. I have no science to back up my statement; I only have my intuition and experience. For instance, during my Sophomore year of high school, I selected climate change as a persuasive topic in speech class. At that time, the estimated crisis point was around the year 2250. Ever since then, I’ve been keeping track of climate change, and with every significant update, that window for the point of no return keeps shrinking: First, it was by 2250, then by 2100, then by 2050, and now within ten years or so. Well, I’m telling you, people, it’s already too late. There is nothing we can do to reverse the inevitable run-away conditions of climate change. Everything is accelerating beyond what scientists keep forecasting: Ice caps melting, droughts, fires, flooding, more severe hurricanes and tornados, and rising sea levels.

However, fear not! Nature always restores balance — always! By what means, you may ask? E.L.E.! That’s how. Look, morons! Humanity is its own best extinction-level event. And that’s going to happen sooner than you may like. Pick a vector: WW III, disease (e.g., COVID), climate change, other. I’m sorry to have to say it, but humanity cannot cope with climate change. There is no desire to meaningfully address the problem because the ramifications are not immediately before us — despite being everywhere around us. We are powerless against the instinct not to sh*t all over the place we live for all of our advances, technology, and brainpower. In some respect, we are still monkeys throwing poo.

Moreover, half of the citizens of one of the highest polluting nations think climate change is all a f***ing hoax or believe why bother — long live oil and coal! Humanity is too lazy to do the hard things like getting off of fossil fuels. But, again, do not worry, for nature will cull no more and no less than is necessary to restore a thriving environment. It just probably won’t include you or your descendants. Welcome to stupid humanity! I expected nothing less.

I Am a Biden Defender Now

Rather than qualify all my future posts with an admission that I was a fierce critic of Biden’s first year, especially regarding his domestic policies and legislative failures, I will state my unequivocal change of mind here in one post. I will not belabor the details of my past frustration with him in this space; you can search my past rantings. Biden is now a wartime president, and he has shown incredible ability to rally the Allies to counter Russian aggression. He is the world leader for which America has been waiting, and, in my mind, there is no other pressing issue, no other monumental task toward which Biden (and every American) should focus; that task is to save Ukraine and save democracy around the world. All that being said, I will continue to assail dumbass Democrats for their incompetence because they are about to hand RepubliKKKlans and traitor trump permanent political control at a time of the highest peril for America and democracy. As always, RepubliKKKlans, MAGA morons, evil evangelicals, QAnon kook, and the like are all traitors to America, without exception! Welcome to stupid America!

The Nuclear Option

Slava Ukraini!

Here is the critical point about the nuclear option that The New York Times writes, “When Vladimir V. Putin declared Sunday that he was putting his nuclear forces into ‘special combat readiness’ — a heightened alert status reminiscent of some of the most dangerous moments of the Cold War — President Biden and his aides had a choice. … But to many in the administration, who spoke on Sunday on the condition of anonymity, it was a stark reminder of how quickly the Ukraine crisis could spin into a direct superpower confrontation — and how it may yet do so, as Mr. Putin tests how far he can go and threatens to use the ultimate weapon to get there [emphasis added].”

Putin increasing the nuclear force readiness is probably all bravado and meant to rattle the Allies; however, it is worrying that he keeps referencing his nuclear capabilities. I fear that such escalating actions and speech could spiral out of control faster than reason can counteract. I am not one of those who ascribe to Putin being non compos mentis. I do think he is readjusting to more significant pushback from Allied and non-Allied nations, especially relating to sanctions that could very well cripple the Russian economy sooner rather than later. I do think he has dictator syndrome.

What gives me more substantial consternation is the constitutional referendum in Belarus and Belarus joining the war. According to FP, “A constitutional referendum in Belarus this weekend is set to allow Russia to house nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil, fueling concerns across Europe that Minsk is moving further into Moscow’s shadow as war continues in neighboring Ukraine. … Most importantly, it will have the power to remove the president. Given the assembly’s political allegiance, and new rules allowing Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to be both president and chair of the assembly, the strongman will now be able to control all the mechanisms of power for years [read: president for life].” This is one step closer to Putin rebuilding the U.S.S.R. Indeed, Belarus is literally voting on — and about to pass — the nuclear option.

Moreover, the Kyiv Independent reports, “As Russia fails to inflict quick defeat upon Ukraine after four days of fierce hostilities, Vladimir Putin is about to pull his Belarusian ally, dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko into his war of occupation.” And from the Daily Mail, “The Ukrainian state security service has officially reported that a rocket attack on Zhytomyr Airport – located some 93 miles west of Kiev (sic) – was launched from the territory of Belarus. Belarusian special forces were seen loading onto airplanes in preparation for an air assault on Kyiv in what could be a widening of the war, military sources stated. Ukrainian intelligence has reportedly learned from within Belarus that ‘special ops’ troops have been spotted loading up planes for a major attack. A widening of the conflict to potentially include Russian ally Belarus could signal Vladimir Putin’s growing fury and frustration as the Russian campaign.” This is exactly how world wars start. Entangling alliances draw one state after another into the conflict until, at some point, two distinct rival coalitions form that are fighting beyond the Ukrainian theater of war. If Belarus joins the war, then I hope the West inflicts all the same sanctions on them as they inflicted on Russia.

I Love It!

Slava Ukraini!

Directly from the mouth of Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Nations, “If [Putin] wants to kill himself, he doesn’t need to use nuclear arsenal. He has to do what the guy in Berlin did in a bunker in May 1945.” Of course, the suggestion is for Putin to pull a Hitler, who actually killed himself in April 1945, but the point is well taken. The world is waiting, Putty Boy!

There is one more Russia corollary with Nazi Germany that is worth a bit of opining. Like Hitler, Putin has reached peak dictator syndrome — making poor decisions unilaterally and his generals supinely oblige. Many German generals expressed varying degrees of a desire to depose Hitler throughout his reign, but there was never a majority or consensus to get rid of a leader who was destroying their armies and the country before their eyes. Astonishingly, they persisted and ultimately helped Hitler usher the ruin of a nation. I wonder what is going on with Putin’s generals. At what point do they commit to destroying Russia and, dare I say, the planet? It is almost incomprehensible that humanity revisits itself — so to speak — despite lessons from history. Namely, we have allowed once again a single person to hold hostage the rest of civilization, and there are, no doubt, enough people close to Putin who could change the course of history but will fail to do so.

The West: Not Appeasing

Slava Ukraini!

A Politico headline sums up my feelings exactly, “The West finally throws a punch in its face-off with Russia.” The article goes on to say, “A rash of weekend moves on sanctions, airspace, military aid and more showed that the United States and its allies aren’t afraid to escalate when it comes to helping Ukraine. The gloves are off, at least for now. After months of making careful, measured moves that failed to persuade Russia to halt plans to invade Ukraine, the United States and its European allies have tossed aside caution in favor of a more ruthless strategy [emphasis added].”

I will be the first to admit that I underestimated the resolve of NATO (and the West). I was wrong, and I’m not afraid to admit it. Unfortunately, NATO has decades of evincing weakness and discord in the face of aggression from international bad actors, so I believed this moment would be no different. I suppose that I underestimated the menace of Russia on NATO and the EU doorstep. Funny how the threat of a mid-day hanging focuses the mind for these institutions because, at this point, no one seems to believe Putin would not stop at Ukraine, especially Sweden and Finland. More than any other non-NATO nation, Finland has a long history of being invaded by Russia.

Of course, there is a bit of irony hidden in Europe’s newfound resolve in no small part thanks to traitor trump. While Biden has masterfully cooperated with and led the collision of European countries, NATO must be coming to the stark realization that Putin is more aggressive than they anticipated. Moreover, there is no guarantee the U.S. will be a NATO member after 2024. In short, traitor trump has forced Europe to take matters into their own hands, which may be unintentionally good, but the true strength of Europe is one allied with the U.S. and nothing less.

Tenacious!

Slava Ukraini!

According to USA Today, “Russian forces have grown increasingly frustrated by Ukrainian resistance, particularly near the capital of Kyiv, and the Russian advance remains about 18 miles from the city, a senior Defense Department official said Saturday. Russia has, however, sent reconnaissance forces into Kyiv, the official said, declining to say how many of those troops have penetrated the city. About 50% of Russia’s combat troops have entered Ukraine up from 30% on Friday, the official said, characterizing the number in the tens of thousands of combat and logistics troops. Russian troops are advancing along three major routes into Ukraine.”

Of course, I am pleased — and not surprised — but I am also cautious not to get too sanguine. Ukraine is holding its own on many fronts, particularly preventing Russia from taking the capital, for now. But please, please understand that what Russia has unleashed so far is barely the tip of the spear. It is only day three. I find it hard to believe Russia thought they could waltz into Kyiv in three days or less. Yes, Ukrainian forces are outnumbered, but they are not inept! And it is certainly great news that Ukrainia’s air force has not ceded total air superiority to the Russian invaders, but there are only so many soldiers and pieces of matériel Russia can rush into a country in 72 hours.

One may speculate all these Russian advances so far as probing (or softening) moves to get a feel for Ukraine’s resolve and how they (military, government, and citizenry) react. Remember, all the analysis we are hearing is from the West, so while all the military brass I hear on the MSM keeps expecting a “shock and awe” strategy, there is no evidence that was ever Russia’s plan. To assume Russian generals would think and act like Americans with “shock and awe” or Nazis with Blitzgreig is foolish. Perhaps Russian generals are thinking more like Grant during the Civil War — I know, yet another “foolish” American comparison — whereby all Grant cared about was killing more Confederate soldiers than Union soldiers because he knew the North had more men than the South. So, tactics and strategies were geared toward killing the most Rebels. I’d say this blunt force “strategy” fits quite well with Putin’s mentality! I fear, however, Putin is about to double down by going full Hitler ala Warsaw, in which case all hell is about to break loose. I think Putin was willing to see if the nation might fall like a house of cards. Now, convinced otherwise, he’ll be looking to break the back of Ukraine. He’s committed to this path, for better and likely for worse!

And a final word about Volodymyr Zelenskyy. No doubt he is a very brave man who has risen to the moment, unlike that see you next Tuesday writer, Olga Rudenko, who penned an essay for The New York Times titled, “The Comedian-Turned-President Is Seriously in Over His Head.” Yeah, she can go suck on the end of a Luger; she seems like the type who would have one handed down from her parentage. Yet, for all of his bravery and commitment to be an example to his countrymen, I hope when the time comes he will evacuate the government from Ukraine. It is absolutely critical that if — dare I say when — Ukraine falls the legitimately elected government must remain intact and coordinate the resistance from exile. At some point, the citizens left behind have to feel that whatever illegitimate government Putin installs is weakened by the true government acting in safety. If Zelenskyy and the government are eliminated then there would be no one and nothing about which to rally. Martyrs have little power compared to living symbols. Think of DeGaulle heading up the resistance in exile in London as a counterweight to the Vichy government in France during WW II. “For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.”

Stock Rally on Russian War!

This headline says it all, “Dow logs best day in over a year to end volatile week as angst over Russia’s Ukraine invasion gives way to buying.” One can see from the graph above the before and after market moves of the most prominent indices — Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P 500. That sharp drop is the beginning of the Russian war on Ukraine. Two days later Americans could not be happier with the crisis! Un-f***ing-believable! The smart money has judged the war and concluded: Eh, whatever! It never f***ing fails. Americans, in their insatiable need to buy and ignore the rest of the world, fail to understand the significance of what Russia is doing to Ukraine and democracy. So, they carry on as if it’s just another day. Granted, the vast majority of Americans do not trade stocks, but the majority own stocks. And their stock ownership is, nonetheless, a pretty good proxy for the mood of the nation. When their investments are up then they are sanguine and oblivious. When their investments are down then they’re wondering how long until Ukraine surrenders! This is why America is doomed! Authoritarianism is welcome on our shores as long as the stock market is up and it does not interfere with American’s Facebook and Twitter time. Welcome to stupid America! Eh!

Harlan Ullman: Moron

Harlan Ullman is a senior advisor at the Atlantic Council, an American think tank in the field of international affairs. I read his article a few days ago and wanted to comment on it then, but I also wanted to make sure the war started first; I’d rather have egg on his face than mine. Needless to say, he authored an article and gave it an absurd title. Not to mention, the date of the article is only eight days ago when almost everyone’s analysis of the situation was yielding the likelihood of not invading as something approaching zero, yet we had the brilliant Ullman writing, “Russia will no doubt continue political and psychological pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to make concessions, either to accept the Minsk 2 agreement (despite its grant of semi-autonomy to the Donbas) or to suspend any request for NATO membership. And Russian ‘active measures,’ such as disinformation campaigns, will continue to target Ukraine with the aim of eroding Zelenskyy’s standing and NATO solidarity by claiming ‘hysteria’ over an invasion that never occurred. This scenario suits Putin’s interests far better than an uncertain military adventure, which is why he will choose it—and not because of anything uttered from a White House podium, no matter how much credit the administration will take for deterring a war [emphasis added].”

Even though he had a rather cogent analysis in the preceding parts of the article, he seems to get to the final two paragraphs quoted above and draws the wrong conclusions at a time when it was becoming more and more obvious to everyone that Putin did not want peace. He seems to completely ignore the nearly 200 thousand troops parked on three sides of Ukraine as if they are purely window dressing and, therefore, Putin’s amusement. That man should be fired for being so colossally and obviously wrong.

Thank God America Has Biden Now

Slava Ukraini!

I have carefully listened to the last three speeches Biden gave on the Ukraine crisis, and I am relieved that we have President Biden at the helm. Of course, allow me to stipulate my prior criticism of Biden, for I am not going to be one of those hypocrites that talks out of both sides of my mouth. Yes, I have been very critical of Biden, mostly for his domestic political incompetence, for example, his quixotic belief that he could work with the RepubliKKKlan Party to get BBB passed or work with them at all on anything. Let’s be clear: McConnell’s only goal is to make Biden a half-term president, and RepubliKKKlans really are the enemy from within. And I was extremely critical of Biden for his Afghanistan withdrawal, but history will be the ultimate judge of the wisdom of his decision, which could very well prove me wrong.

All that being said, Biden, without a doubt, has hit his stride and proved his strength on the international stage as a wartime president. The addresses to the country, his ability to unify NATO, and the actions he has taken against Putin are proof of his ability. I have argued sanctions will not work, but I am willing to let Biden try if he thinks these sanctions are as server as he says they are. And I should qualify what I mean by “work.” Sanctions were never going to change Putin’s mind or, at this point, get him to withdraw from Ukraine. I think these sanctions are really in place to prevent Putin from further expansionist endeavors beyond Ukraine. I think they should be used as purely punitive measures — to hurt Putin and Russians. Nonetheless, it’s better than standing by and watching, which Bush II and Obama essentially did when handling Russia. And it is undoubtedly better than siding with Russia, which traitor trump did routinely and without hesitation. And I have argued more than once that the West will ultimately sacrifice Ukraine for peace, but Biden is starting to convince me otherwise; I remain skeptical, but I will do that one worthless thing I am constantly railing against: Hope.

My only critique is that Biden may not be going hard enough, fast enough. Moreover, he keeps failing to fully explain why this moment in history is important to each American. Why preserving Ukraine’s democracy is important to every American citizen. Yes, he speaks broadly about America standing up to bullies and standing up for freedom as being something that we do and something that defines who we are as a nation. Yes, he spoke to the economic anxieties of Americans. But I don’t think he belabors the point quite hard enough that defending freedom is critical to every person. Americans are a rather obtuse and selfish bunch, so one must speak slowly, using small words over and over again, making sure to use the word “you” copiously.

I will say this as a final thought. Biden absolutely nailed it when he correctly warned — repeatedly — that the greatest challenge of our time is preserving democracies in the face of growing autocracies. Even I was late on the up-take as he made it a talking point in his presidential campaign. But he was absolutely right and clear-eyed about the continuing threat that autocracies around the world pose to America. Now, if only we could convince the rest of America! Welcome to stupid America!
